Sustainability Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis Will the redesign be sustained now that the grant period is over? The IUPUI course-redesign team is convinced that the redesign is sustainable primarily because the faculty have become leading advocates for the redesign. Sociology faculty have created a new culture for the teaching of Introduction to Sociology. There is no going back. Links between sections of Elementary Composition and Introduction to Sociology courses will continue because instructors in both departments agree that these links are pedagogically sound. Although the number of links may vary from one semester to the next, linking will continue for the foreseeable future. In addition, IUPUI’s Political Science Department successfully linked a section of Introduction to American Politics to a section of Introduction to Sociology. Also, IUPUI is adopting “block schedules” for first-year students: students will co-enroll in two to four courses in “learning blocks.” The Pew project has influenced the block development. In fall 2002, in addition to English-sociology links, the School of Liberal Arts will offer three learning blocks for first-year students.
